Why Vitamin D Matters
Share
When we think about essential vitamins for our health, vitamin D often flies under the radar. As a pharmacist, I can tell you it absolutely shouldn’t.
Vitamin D plays a vital role in supporting our immune system, bone and muscle health, and more. Our bodies create vitamin D from sunlight. However, here in Ireland, where sunny days are few and far between many of us aren’t getting enough of it.
What Is Vitamin D and Why Do We Need It?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, two key minerals for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Research also shows that vitamin D supports immune function and muscle strength.
Why Are Deficiencies So Common?
The main source of vitamin D is sunlight. Our skin produces it when exposed to UVB rays. In Ireland, sunlight is often too weak from October to March to meet our body's needs, especially for those with darker skin tones, older adults, or people who spend most of their time indoors.
While vitamin D is present in oily fish, eggs, red meat, fortified dairy products, and some breakfast cereals, these foods typically provide only small amounts. Even with a balanced diet, it’s difficult to get enough vitamin D from food alone.
Should I Take a Supplement?
In Ireland, it’s recommended that:
- All babies (birth to 12 months) take a daily vitamin D supplement.
- Children over 1 and adults consider taking a daily supplement from October to March.
- People at higher risk of deficiency (including those with little sun exposure or darker skin tones) may benefit from taking it all year round.
Too much vitamin D can be harmful, so always follow the dosage instructions on the label.
As it’s hard to get enough vitamin D from diet and sunshine alone, a daily supplement is a simple and reliable way to maintain healthy levels.
